Summer Solstice: Standing in the Fullness of Your Light
By Lizz Naughton

The Summer Solstice arrives each year as a powerful reminder to pause and take stock of our journey.
As the longest day of the year, the Solstice marks a moment when the sun reaches its peak expression. Nature is in full bloom. Gardens are thriving. The days are warm and abundant. Life seems to be saying, "Look how far you've come."
For many of us, the first half of the year can feel like a whirlwind of responsibilities, challenges, growth, and unexpected detours. We spend so much time moving forward that we rarely stop to acknowledge our progress.
The Summer Solstice invites us to do exactly that.
Not to measure our success by what we've accomplished, but by who we've become.
It asks us to pause long enough to notice what has healed, what has strengthened, and what is now ready to flourish.
The Spiritual Meaning of the Summer Solstice
For centuries, cultures around the world have celebrated the Summer Solstice as a sacred turning point. It represents illumination, vitality, abundance, and the power of life force energy.
Yet there is a beautiful paradox hidden within this day.
The Solstice is not only the day of greatest light. It is also the moment when the light begins its gradual return toward darkness.
Nature reminds us that expansion and reflection are partners. Growth and rest belong together.
This is why the Solstice is such a powerful time for contemplation.
The question is not:
"What else do I need to do?"
The question becomes:
"What wants my attention and devotion during the second half of the year?"
The Wisdom of the Earth Element
In Energy Medicine, summer invites us to pay close attention to the Earth Element.
The Earth Element governs nourishment, compassion, stability, support, and our sense of belonging.
When Earth energy is balanced, we feel grounded and connected. We trust ourselves. We trust life. We know how to receive support from others.
When Earth energy is out of balance, we may find ourselves worrying, overthinking, taking care of everyone else, or feeling disconnected from our own needs.
The Summer Solstice offers an opportunity to restore that balance.
To slow down.
To nourish ourselves.
To remember that we cannot pour from an empty cup.
A Solstice Reflection
Take a moment and ask yourself:
- What has grown in my life since January?
- What challenge has made me stronger?
- What have I learned about myself?
- What am I ready to release?
- What deserves my energy moving forward?
There are no right or wrong answers.
The purpose isn't to judge your progress.
The purpose is to witness it.
Three Simple Summer Solstice Practices
You don't need elaborate rituals to honor the Solstice. Sometimes the most powerful practices are also the simplest.
1. Ground Yourself with the Earth
One of my favorite Energy Medicine practices is also one of the easiest.
Take off your shoes and stand on the earth.
Feel your feet making contact with the ground.
Take several slow breaths.
Imagine roots extending from your feet deep into the earth.
As you exhale, release worry, stress, and mental clutter.
As you inhale, receive support, stability, and nourishment.
Spend five minutes simply breathing and connecting.
The Earth is always offering support. Sometimes we just need to remember to receive it.
2. Trace Your Central Meridian
The Central Meridian is one of the body's extraordinary energy pathways and is associated with clarity, presence, and personal alignment.
To trace the Central Meridian:
- Place one hand at your pubic bone.
- Slowly move your hand up the centerline of your body.
- Continue up your chest and throat, it ends below your bottom lip, above your chin in the space between the two.
- Repeat three times while breathing slowly.
As you trace, affirm:
"I am aligned with my highest good."
This simple practice can help you feel more centered and connected to your own inner wisdom.
3. Create a Summer Solstice Intention
Instead of creating a long list of goals, choose a single word or phrase that reflects how you want to feel during the next six months.
Examples might include:
- Trust
- Courage
- Joy
- Connection
- Peace
- Authenticity
- Presence
Write your word somewhere you'll see it often.
Allow it to become a guiding compass rather than another task to accomplish.
Love as a Practice
One of the teachings I return to often is that healing is not about becoming someone else.
Healing is about becoming more fully ourselves.
When we stop fighting who we are, something remarkable happens.
We soften.
We trust.
We become more available to love.
Not just romantic love.
Love for our lives.
Love for our bodies.
Love for our journey.
Love for the people who walk beside us.
The Summer Solstice reminds us that we are not here to hide our light.
We are here to embody it.
Not perfectly.
Not constantly.
But authentically.
Moving Into the Second Half of the Year
As the sun begins its slow journey toward autumn, consider this:
What if the second half of the year isn't about doing more?
What if it's about living more deeply?
What if the wisdom you've been seeking is already present within you?
What if the next step isn't something you need to force, but something you need to trust?
Take a breath.
Place your hand over your heart.
Feel the steady rhythm beneath your palm.
Your life is unfolding exactly one moment at a time.
You don't need all the answers today.
You only need the willingness to listen.
The Summer Solstice is an invitation to honor what has grown, trust what is unfolding, and step forward with an open heart.
May you stand in the fullness of your light.
And may that light illuminate the path ahead.
Summer Solstice Contemplation
Where am I being called to move from striving into trust, from doing into being, and from seeking love into becoming love?
